Jean Mabillon

Benedictine monk who founded diplomatics — the discipline of authenticating documents against dated exemplars — in 1681, to refute a Jesuit's charge that the Church's own charters were forgeries. The vault's central figure for a recurring question: how far, and by what route, did document-based verification travel from monastic charter-authentication into general historical method and, eventually, scientific-priority adjudication.
