Jean Mabillon

Benedictine monk who founded diplomatics — the discipline of authenticating documents against dated exemplars — in 1681, to refute a Jesuit's charge that the Church's own charters were forgeries. The vault's central figure for a recurring question: how far, and by what route, did document-based verification travel from monastic charter-authentication into general historical method and, eventually, scientific-priority adjudication. As of 2026-07-31 the vault has a documented direct route (Mabillon → 17th-century historiography of mathematics, via Wallis and Raphson) and an unconfirmed one (Mabillon → 19th-century Quellenkritik/Ranke).
