Federico Faggin
Italian-American physicist and microprocessor pioneer who led the design of the Intel 4004 (1970–71) — the first commercial microprocessor — executing its silicon-gate, transistor-level circuit design, and who later founded Zilog and co-created the Z80. In the vault he is the spine of a second thread entirely: the engineer who built the first microprocessor's circuits and then argued, decades on, that classical silicon computation can never produce consciousness. With physicist Giacomo Mauro D'Ariano he co-developed Quantum Information Panpsychism (QIP), the position that qualia require private, non-clonable quantum states — something classical, freely-copyable computation structurally lacks. His 2024 book Irreducible (not 2021 — that was his memoir Silicon) is the popular statement of the view.
