Mikel Olazaran
Sociologist of science whose 1993 chapter "A Sociological History of the Neural Network Controversy" (Advances in Computers, vol. 37) built a documented, interview-based account of why neural-network research declined in the mid-1960s, drawing on direct interviews with SRI researchers including Nils Nilsson, Charles Rosen, Richard Duda, and Peter Hart, plus Marvin Minsky himself. Matters to this vault as the single most load-bearing primary source for its "social closure, not scientific refutation" reading of connectionism's eclipse — the account that SRI's group retooled toward symbolic AI to follow ARPA funding, years before Minsky and Papert's Perceptrons was even published.
Olazaran's own chapter cites Dreyfus and Stuart Dreyfus's 1988 Daedalus essay in his reference list and once in-argument — but only for a narrow dating point, not for their "never really refuted" philosophical framing, and never run alongside his own SRI evidence as joint anti-refutation argument.

Updates
- 2026-10-10: Olazaran's 1993 bibliography turns out to also cite Robert Merton's priority/multiple-discovery corpus (1961, 1973) alongside both editions of Perceptrons — and, on p.396, applies Merton's multiple-discovery thesis in-argument to Paul Werbos's backpropagation priority claim, distinct from the Harry Collins controversy-closure framework ("Collins, 1981, 1985") his own conclusion names as governing the chapter's main Minsky–Papert–Rosenblatt analysis. Not previously recorded on this page. - 2026-10-10: A separate finding (not about Olazaran's own text) supplies a candidate reason his account and Dreyfus's never get combined in the published literature: the Dreyfus & Dreyfus essay Olazaran cites only for a narrow dating point turns out to be the very same 1988 Daedalus essay that carries, three pages away, the anti-symbolic-AI sentence Jordanous separately cites to frame Dreyfus as a precursor to Brooks. One document does two jobs; two literatures each read only the paragraph they need. (observation-dreyfus-1988-single-essay-split-across-two-readerships-explains-combined-framing-absence)
