Nestor, Inc.

A Providence, Rhode Island neural-network company founded in 1975 by Nobel physics laureate Leon Cooper and Charles Elbaum, which sold commercial pattern-recognition products — sonar/radar classification, optical check and handwriting reading, eventually traffic-camera enforcement — continuously through the decades academic connectionism was supposedly dormant, without ever turning a profit.

Matters to this vault as the actor at the center of two otherwise-separate threads: it is the commercial-survivor counterexample to the standard AI-winter narrative (claim-nestor-inc-commercialized-neural-nets-through-ai-winter), and it is the contracting party whose own SEC filings supply the only Tier-1 paper trail for the defense money — DARPA and the Office of Naval Research — behind its Ni1000 chip.
