Intel was founded in 1968 by Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, who left Fairchild Semiconductor to start it. Intel is, in the literal corporate-genealogy sense, Fairchild's offspring — one of the "Fairchildren" spun out of the firm Noyce and Moore had themselves co-founded in 1957.

That genealogy makes the two branches of the late-1980s "Japan panic" physically touch. Intel fabricated the Ni1000 neural chip whose development was paid for by DARPA and ONR grants born of the US–Japan computing rivalry (claim-ni1000-neural-chip-funded-by-darpa-and-onr). Nineteen years after Intel's founding, the 1987 attempt by Fujitsu to buy Fairchild Semiconductor supplied "much of the impetus" for the Exon-Florio Amendment (claim-exon-florio-triggered-by-fujitsu-fairchild-not-toshiba). So the firm whose attempted purchase supplied the statute's impetus (Fairchild — which the statute, enacted 1988 after the bid was withdrawn and the company sold to National Semiconductor, never actually shielded) is the corporate parent of the firm that built the defense-funded neural chip (Intel).
