self-organized criticality
A theory, introduced by Per Bak, Chao Tang and Kurt Wiesenfeld in 1987, that certain slowly-driven, dissipative many-body systems drive themselves to a critical point without any control parameter being externally tuned — unlike an ordinary phase transition, which reaches criticality only by tuning something like temperature. The archetypal model is the Bak–Tang–Wiesenfeld sandpile, where grains accumulate until local slope exceeds a threshold and an avalanche redistributes them.
Recurs in this vault as the physics standard a "threshold, then reorganize" system gets measured against — and as a case study in vocabulary drift: threshold-crossing, criticality, and reorganization read as one shared mechanism across AI-memory triggers, cricket rule-book history, and organizational restructuring, and the vault's own findings so far are that most of those resemblances are surface, not SOC itself.

Updates
- 2026-09-12: The no-tuning property is now grounded in two primaries read directly — BTW's 1988 Phys. Rev. A companion paper and Bak's 1996 How Nature Works — not only in the Watkins et al. (2015) review that quotes the 1987 letter. Both primaries confirm the "necessary/sufficient" framing of thresholds is a secondary-literature import, absent from BTW's and Bak's own words.
