Headless promotion session. One capture in the queue: 10-inbox/raw/2026-08-30-does-the-soc-primary-literature-confirm-that-self.md — the verification run against question-verify-soc-no-external-tuning-necessary-not-sufficient, the question I'd left open back on 2026-07-12 when claim-engineered-threshold-is-not-self-organized-criticality had to lean on a Tier-3 MIT course project instead of Bak's own words.

What I promoted. Four claim-notes, all off the same Tier-1 source (Watkins, Pruessner, Chapman, Crosby & Jensen's 2015 refereed review, "25 Years of Self-Organized Criticality," read in full to Sec. 8.1 at capture):

I also went back into claim-engineered-threshold-is-not-self-organized-criticality and corrected it in place — a proper Correction history block, not a silent edit. The good news arrived split down the middle, which is a better outcome than either a clean win or a clean loss would have been: the no-tuning half of that note is now Tier-1 grounded and stronger than it's ever been. The "necessary but not sufficient" phrase it inherited from the Tier-3 course project, though, doesn't survive contact with the primary-adjacent literature — not because it's false, but because the actual review never puts thresholds on a "necessary" list at all; it puts them on the sufficient list and calls the necessity question one of the field's own open problems. So the note's core claim (an engineered threshold is tuned, and tuning is what SOC forbids) comes out stronger; one clause of its supporting language came out corrected. Raised it from seedling to budding.

I ruled the originating question — status answered, with answered_log naming the three claims and what actually settled it. Worth being honest in the log about what this isn't: I still haven't read BTW 1987/1988 themselves, or Bak's How Nature Works. Both remain paywalled or unfetched. What cleared the sourcing floor instead was a refereed review that quotes the primary directly, with page citations — which the vault's own sourcing rules treat as legitimate, but it's a real gap in "read the primary," not a euphemism for having closed it.

Entities. The capture flagged nine person candidates plus three concept candidates. I promoted two: entity-per-bak (the eponym — real, load-bearing, easy to say why in one sentence) and entity-self-organized-criticality (recurring, load-bearing concept across at least three existing clusters now — the engineered-threshold note, the cricket-laws phase-transition note, and this capture). I did not promote hub pages for Tang, Wiesenfeld, Watkins, Pruessner, Jensen, Dickman, Vespignani, or Dhar — each is real and each matters to SOC, but each is a single-appearance mention in one capture with no independent salience shown yet, and I'd rather leave eight recoverable gaps than build eight thin stub pages that can't be told apart from noise. I also didn't stub SDIDT (Jensen's threshold reformulation) — on reflection it's closer to established jargon than a volatile "emerging term," and it hasn't recurred outside this one capture, so it stayed unpromoted rather than forced into the watching-stub category just because I could.

What felt off about the capture, if anything. Genuinely, not much — this is a well-run capture. Sourcing discipline was tight throughout: it explicitly refused ResearchGate mirrors of the paywalled BTW originals, flagged its own [unverified-quant] figures instead of quietly promoting them, and was scrupulous about attributing the "necessary but not sufficient" line to Golyk rather than to Bak even before I got to it (that correction happened back on 2026-07-12, cross-model). The one thing worth naming: the retrieve-before-write hint surfaced two "related" notes — moc-machine-self-knowledge and observation-fresh-start-effect-extensions-stay-individual-not-collective — that turned out to be pure "self"-word collisions, not genuine topical neighbors, once I actually read them. Neither is about self-organized criticality in any sense that matters. This is the same shape as the vault's own well-documented "embedding false friend" pattern (see observation-gates-jevons-cosine-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend and its siblings) — I didn't write a new formal instance note for it, since I don't have cosine numbers behind this one, just my own read that the resemblance is surface. Logged below instead.

What I skipped. The pause-for-Cali step, per the headless charter — this is a straightforward winnow-and-promote with no genuinely contested calls, so proceeding on my own judgment felt right rather than merely permitted. No git commands run; the auto-commit agent has this.

Seven items stayed in the capture's not_promoted: list — mostly unread primary leads (Jensen's falsified-SOC lattice-gas model, Sapoval's 1998 skeptical interview, Dickman's fluctuating-control-parameter proposal, Vespignani/Dickman's still-unverified mechanism, four named critiques never read) plus the entity candidates that didn't clear the hub bar. All judged, none missed — the capture's frontmatter carries the full list with reasoning.

Second promotion this session: 10-inbox/raw/2026-08-30-hop-feldbaum-dual-control-rl-precursor.md, a hop-chain capture that set out to check a 0.89-cosine resemblance between two one-child-policy historiography notes and, having found that resemblance already resolved by the vault months ago, wandered onward into Susan Greenhalgh's own biography of Song Jian and surfaced a name nobody here had chased: A.A. Fel'dbaum.

What I promoted. Three notes plus one new entity page, all off two Tier-1 primaries:

Entity page updated, not skipped. entity-song-jian already existed and didn't mention Fel'dbaum anywhere in its body — I appended a dated line rather than letting a known entity's page stay silent about something the vault just learned about him.

What I didn't promote. Karl Åström (real, established, but unread this session — only known secondhand via the survey's mention that his 1965 paper extends Fel'dbaum's problem into POMDPs; no claim-note reads him, so "unsure → don't promote" applies) and the survey's own authors, Meijer & Rantzer (the capture itself flagged them "minor, completeness only," and I agreed). Three further leads — Fel'dbaum's own 1960/61 papers, Åström's 1965 paper, and the WWII "dropped over Germany" bandit quip — stayed unread and unpromoted, saved rather than chased. Full reasoning is in the capture's own not_promoted: list.

What felt off. Nothing about the sourcing — both primaries were read directly (extract_pdf on the Greenhalgh PDF, arXiv PDF for Meijer & Rantzer), both quotes are load-bearing and specific, and the capture was honest that its own "person-bridge invisible to embedding retrieval" framing rests on a tool limitation it correctly diagnosed rather than oversold. The one thing worth naming for the ledger: this is the second time a promotion has found a real cross-cluster bridge that existed only as an unlinked name in another note's commentary — the first was the 2026-08-18 A.E. Clark/Woeser bridge. Logged as a [watch] flag in 00-meta/seek-flags.md; two instances is a pattern worth a future look, not yet a fix I know how to make myself.

What I skipped. The pause-for-Cali step, per the headless charter — straightforward winnow with no genuinely contested calls. No git commands run; the auto-commit agent has this.

Third promotion this session: 10-inbox/raw/2026-08-30-what-does-song-jians-original-1995-self-credit.md — a capture that went straight back at question-verify-song-jian-1980-self-credit-primary-chinese, the essay citation this same question's own progress log has carried since 2026-07-11, with a fresh extract_pdf re-read of Greenhalgh's paper and a dedicated search sweep for the still-unlocated 1999 Chinese volume.

What I promoted. Two claim-notes, both off the same Tier-1 Greenhalgh PDF, same sha256 as every prior session's fetch of it:

What I didn't promote as a claim, and where it went instead. The capture's third finding — the 1999 volume still isn't locatable, and no independent source quotes the Chinese original — is a search-negative, not a new atomic claim, and the question it belongs to already existed. Rather than write a third claim-note that would just restate "still don't know," I appended a dated progress-log entry directly to question-verify-song-jian-1980-self-credit-primary-chinese, folding in the two weak supporting leads (an unreadable Google Books preview via a Tier-3 blog, and two near-identical Miltimore pieces that just re-quote Greenhalgh) as corroboration of the negative rather than claims in their own right. This felt like the more honest move than manufacturing a claim out of an absence. Five further items — Huang Shouzeng's biographical sketch, the unread 1985 CSTD essay, and the 1999-volume-as-its-own-stub idea — stayed as leads in the capture's not_promoted: list, reasoning attached to each.

Entities. Four candidates flagged: Norbert Wiener, A.A. Fel'dbaum, Huang Shouzeng, and the 1999 volume itself as a concept/work. I promoted Wiener to a new hub, entity-norbert-wiener — he'd been cited as cybernetics' founding figure across at least three existing claim-notes already (the CPS-common-root note, the CPS/backprop negative-link note, the Nyquist-Bode bridge note) plus this capture's own footnote, without ever having his own page; first_seen set to 2026-07-11, the date of the earliest of those notes, not today, since that's genuinely when the vault first met him. Fel'dbaum I left alone on purpose — he already got a hub page a few hours earlier in this same session's second promotion, and it already documents the exact "world-famous control theorist" / 1953 Moscow detail this capture surfaced independently; nothing to append. Huang Shouzeng (a minor biographical-sketch author, no clear one-sentence vault-relevance yet) and the 1999 volume as its own stub (doesn't fit the person/concept/term/org categories cleanly, and is already thoroughly tracked through existing claim-notes and this entity's own Updates log) both failed the "when unsure, don't promote" bar. entity-song-jian already existed and didn't mention this session's framing nuance anywhere in its body, so I appended a dated line rather than leaving it silent.

What felt off about the capture. Nothing structural — sourcing was careful throughout (fresh re-fetch, sha verified, direct quotes with page numbers, explicit [unverified-quote] and [unverified-historical] flagging rather than smoothing over the gaps). If anything, this capture is a good example of a session that found something real without finding the thing it went looking for: three research sessions now (2026-08-09, 08-10, and today) have each added a layer to the citation trail around this essay — bibliographic identity, now genre framing, now a corroborating pattern of self-citation — and the actual Chinese text is no closer to being read than it was seven weeks ago. That's not a flaw in any one session's work; it's a genuinely stuck primary, and the honest thing is to keep saying so rather than let three converging claim-notes start to feel like confirmation of something nobody has actually read.

What I skipped. The pause-for-Cali step, per the headless charter — straightforward winnow, no genuinely contested calls, and the one borderline judgment (Wiener's hub) had three independent pre-existing notes behind it before I ever opened this capture. No git commands run; the auto-commit agent has this.

Fourth promotion this session: 10-inbox/raw/2026-08-30-what-genuinely-connects-geert-jan-olsders-own-account.md — another bridge-seed capture in the same Olsder/Song-Jian cluster, this one checking a 0.87-cosine pairing between claim-olsder-account-traces-song-jian-twente-contact-to-1975-delegation-visit and claim-greenhalgh-2003-article-documents-kwakernaak-1977-citation-in-song-1981.

What I promoted. One claim-note:

What I skipped, and why — this is the notable part of this session. Two of the capture's four candidate claims were straight duplicates once I actually checked 30-notes/: the "bridge is real, different mechanisms" synthesis fully re-derives observation-kwakernaak-1977-citation-trail-sharpens-not-resolves-1975-dating-dispute (2026-08-25) from scratch, and the "Olsder's 1976 paper is co-cited alongside Kwakernaak" finding is already documented, verbatim, footnote and all, in claim-greenhalgh-2005-article-independently-cites-kwakernaak-1977 (2026-08-28). Neither is a defect in this capture's sourcing — both re-reads were accurate — but both cost a full PDF re-fetch to arrive at a fact the vault already had recorded. A fourth candidate (the "taken together, evidence cuts against 1975" synthesis) I folded into the one promoted note rather than writing separately, since it's the direct implication of the same new quote, not a distinct fact. Full reasoning for all three skips is in the capture's own not_promoted: list.

Entities and questions. entity-song-jian and entity-geert-jan-olsder both already existed; both got dated update lines rather than silence — Song's page for the new self-quote, Olsder's for the newly-noticed link between his own 1976 co-authored paper and the citation trail (a fact the vault had but had never connected to his page). entity-susan-greenhalgh got a short line too: this is the first time either of her two articles yielded a first-person Song quote rather than her own narrative synthesis. No new entity hubs — Kwakernaak had nothing new said about him this session, and the Olsder-Strijbos 1976 paper is a bibliographic reference, not a hub candidate. I appended progress-log lines to both open questions this capture bears on (question-verify-song-jian-1975-twente-delegation-visit, question-song-jian-1978-europe-trip-identify-as-ifac-helsinki-congress) rather than closing either — the new quote sharpens both without resolving them, and forcing closure on a "cuts against, doesn't disprove" finding would overclaim.

What felt off about the capture. The duplication, mainly — logged as a [watch] flag in 00-meta/seek-flags.md rather than buried in this session's own not_promoted list, because it's not just this capture: this is at least the fifth bridge-seed session this month re-opening the same handful of primaries (Greenhalgh 2003/2005, the U-Today interview, Liang's essay) and half of this one's candidate claims were re-derivations rather than discoveries. The sourcing itself was fine throughout — sha256s matched, quotes were re-verified verbatim, the flag on Song's quote was carried forward honestly rather than dropped. It's a structural cost, not a sourcing one: a batch worker doing bridge-seed pairing without checking 30-notes/ first is going to keep re-deriving the same three or four established verdicts in this cluster until something upstream of promotion does that check.

What I skipped. The pause-for-Cali step, per the headless charter — the winnowing calls were clear once I'd read the existing notes, even though two of them took real work to confirm as duplicates rather than assume. No git commands run; the auto-commit agent has this.

Fifth promotion this session: 10-inbox/raw/2026-08-30-what-genuinely-connects-greenhalghs-own-paper-concedes-a.md — a third bridge-seed capture today in the same Olsder/Song-Jian/Greenhalgh cluster, this one checking a 0.87-cosine pairing between claim-greenhalgh-text-concedes-1976-leadership-consensus-predates-song-cybernetics and claim-greenhalgh-2003-article-echoes-kwakernaak-then-liang-narrative-structure.

Verdict, and why it's not the same failure mode as the last one. The bridge doesn't hold — the 1976-consensus fact and the Kwakernaak-then-Liang narrative structure turn out to be two separate observations about two separate features of Greenhalgh's prose, not two halves of one argument. Unlike the fourth promotion above, none of this capture's three findings duplicated an existing note. That's worth naming precisely because the cluster has a documented re-tread problem right now (see the [watch] flag I just logged on the previous capture) — this one actually did the close read and came back with three things the vault didn't already have.

What I promoted. Two claim-notes and one observation, all off the same two Tier-1 Greenhalgh PDFs already on file (sha256 unchanged from every prior session's fetch):

What I didn't promote. The capture's fourth claim — that the 0.87 cosine score is explained by shared author, subject, and rhetorical move rather than a documented link between the two facts — is the bridge-seed verdict itself, already stated in this capture's own title and body; writing a fourth note would have restated the negative result the two claim-notes above already establish with sources, so I left it in the capture rather than manufacturing a fourth atomic unit around a methodological observation about the vault's own retrieval, not about the world. The Bucharest/1974-UN-conference angle the capture flagged as genuinely unexplored stayed unread and unpromoted — a real lead, honestly marked as one.

Entities. Six candidates, all already hub pages, all marked "reinforced" by the capture. I updated three in place rather than treating "reinforced" as "nothing to do": entity-susan-greenhalgh (the crisis tension and the 1976-fact's non-recurrence are new to her page's Updates log), entity-deng-xiaoping (the 2003 article's own undated framing of his rise is a quote her page didn't carry), and entity-hua-guofeng (his own mid-1978 "necessity of planning" justification, a fact about him the page didn't have, sourced to a different passage than the one already cited there). Kwakernaak, Liang Zhongtang, and Song Jian I left untouched — genuinely reinforced, no new fact about any of the three beyond what their already-extensive Updates logs (largely from the 2026-08-28 investigation of this exact cluster) record. Silence there is a judgment, not an oversight, and I said so in the capture's not_promoted: list.

No question routed. No [unverified-*] flag anywhere in this capture — both quotes came from direct extract_pdf reads against Tier 1 primaries already on file, and neither new claim rests on a load-bearing doubt that needs a 50-questions/ entry. The crisis-tension claim is a genuine tension, not an open question — both sides are directly quoted and sourced, and it doesn't need external resolution to stand.

What felt off about the capture, if anything. Nothing in the sourcing — tight as every other capture in this cluster this month. The one thing worth naming for the record: this is now the third time today alone this exact author-pair (Greenhalgh 2003/2005) has been re-opened by a bridge-seed worker, and this is the one time out of three where the reread found something the vault didn't already have on the first two tries. I don't think that's luck — this topic's pairing (a chronological concession vs. a narrative-structure echo) was different in kind from the citation-trail pairings the other two sessions checked, which is probably exactly why the 0.87 cosine score paired it with something real-sounding rather than something already filed. Worth remembering next time a batch worker's pairing looks superficially similar to a prior week's: check what kind of claim each side is before assuming the resemblance is redundant.

What I skipped. The pause-for-Cali step, per the headless charter — a "bridge doesn't hold" verdict with three cleanly sourced, non-duplicate findings behind it is not a contested call. No git commands run; the auto-commit agent has this.

Drafting session (same day, separate hat). I set out to survey and write one post, and the freshest thing on the shelf was the material I'd promoted only hours earlier: the Fel'dbaum hop. Two "yes" leads were sitting unsettled — the Ossietzky/Liu Xiaobo Nobel bridge (2026-08-29) and this one — and I chose Fel'dbaum over Ossietzky deliberately. Both are clean Tier-1 person-bridges. But the Fel'dbaum thread lands on AI/RL, carries a genuine cross-time bridge (1960 Soviet control theory living inside a 2026 RL survey), and — the deciding factor — it has a spine the sound spec explicitly prizes: the hop that found him was itself a dual-control problem. The seed handed me a settled question I could have exploited; I probed instead, and the payoff was the name. Form enacts subject. The Ossietzky piece is beautiful but has no comparable self-referential engine, and it sits further from the blog's center of gravity.

Drafted 70-drafts/without-probing/. Title without probing, from Fel'dbaum's own line (via Meijer & Rantzer): "Without probing, you will not learn how the system responds" — which is the spine, the payload, and an honest description of my own method all at once.

What I drew on. The three notes I promoted this morning (claim-song-jian-studied-under-feldbaum-in-moscow, claim-feldbaum-1960s-dual-control-formalized-exploration-exploitation-tradeoff, observation-feldbaum-person-bridge-invisible-to-vault-bridge-tool), the new entity-aa-feldbaum hub, the parenthetical-aside note the hop started from (claim-song-jian-missile-scientist-engineered-one-child-policy-via-cybernetics-of-population), and the separate optimal-control-into-backprop lineage (moc-backpropagation-origins, claim-kelley-bryson-optimal-control-precursor) for the "ancestor-that-doesn't-look-like-one" contrast.

What I deliberately left for later. The birth-rate angle — Song Jian turning optimal control on China's fertility curve — is already drafted (aimed-at-a-birth-rate, what-the-model-was-for) and the causal historiography is contested, so I kept Song strictly as the doorway and the human juxtaposition, never the center, and hedged the causal claim twice. Also left: Fel'dbaum's own 1960/61 Avtomatika i Telemekhanika primaries (unread, Russian), and Åström's 1965 POMDP extension — both flagged as the next hop inside the piece itself rather than smuggled in as if I'd read them. And I passed over the Ossietzky lead for now; it's still a live "yes" and worth its own session.

Honesty passes did real work: softened "the theorem aimed itself at every learner" (overclaim) and "teach the man who reshaped a country" (leans on the contested causal thesis) to claims that survive the narrowed reading. Fixed the hero-image caption after catching myself writing that a centrifugal governor "probes" — it doesn't; supplying the probing is exactly what dual control adds over plain feedback, which is the essay's own distinction, so the caption had to say so.

Marked the lead (drafted 2026-08-30). Draft only — not published, no go-ahead sought yet.
