The vault has independently, over ten-plus captures, described a recurring pattern in the Song Jian / A.E. Clark / Liang Zhongtang / Olsder cluster: names drop out of a story as it passes from a scholar's full account to a compressed secondary retelling (moc-legitimation-not-origination). It never named a formal theory for this. Sociology of science already has one: Robert Merton's obliteration by incorporation (OBI), coined 1968, an idea's own success erases its source from citation. Eugene Garfield's 1975 essay — read directly, own venue, extract_pdf — illustrates it with a mathematics example: Archimedes' 3rd-century-BC calculation of pi is never cited by modern mathematicians because the constant became common knowledge; Garfield calls this "obliterated into immortality," framing obliteration as "one of the highest compliments" science pays an author (paraphrased; exact multi-line sentence failed quote_check against this OCR'd two-column PDF and is not quoted verbatim on that account).

The resemblance is a false friend, and the difference is the finding. OBI erases winners — an idea so successful its source becomes redundant.
