Jay Forrester convened the 1970 MIT conference that produced World Dynamics — the same Club-of-Rome modeling lineage Song Jian later adapted for China's one-child policy
Jay Forrester — MIT engineer, inventor of magnetic-core computer memory, and founder of the field of System Dynamics — wrote in his own essay Counterintuitive Behavior of Social Systems (first published January 1971; quoted here from the March 1995 updated text, D-4468-2): "In July, 1970, we held at MIT a two-week international conference on world dynamics. A meeting was organized for the Club of Rome, a private group of about 100 individuals drawn from many countries who had joined together to attempt a better understanding of world problems." That July 1970 MIT conference produced Forrester's World Dynamics (1971), a computer simulation of global population, industry, resources, food, and pollution, which Donella and Dennis Meadows then refined into The Limits to Growth (1972) — the Club of Rome's best-known report.
This is the exact modeling lineage the vault already documents Song Jian adapting eight years later. Susan Greenhalgh's history records that Song, a Chinese missile-guidance control theorist, encountered "the work of the Club of Rome" at the 1978 IFAC World Congress in Helsinki and used that "Sinified cybernetics of population" to help build the technical case for China's one-child policy. Prior to this note, the vault's only record of Forrester was as unsourced Tier 3–4 "hop-chain scenery" in the original Song Jian capture — the method's own inventor, present in the story but never independently sourced or credited. Forrester is that lineage's uncredited American originator: a computer engineer, not a demographer or economist, whose systems-modeling method was aimed at global population, industry, and resources before any government applied a version of it to a national fertility rate.
