Liang Zhongtang's 2009 essay and Jay Forrester's 1971 essay do not reference each other; the vault's link between them runs entirely through the existing Song Jian note
A session investigating a high-cosine-similarity pairing (0.87, previously unlinked) between Liang Zhongtang's 2009 essay and Jay Forrester's 1971 essay confirmed, by reading both primary texts directly, that neither cites, quotes, or names the other's subject matter. Liang's essay — a demographer's causal audit of a 1980 Chinese population-policy credit claim — contains no mention of Forrester, MIT, the Club of Rome, World Dynamics, or Helsinki. Forrester's essay — an American engineer's own account of convening a 1970 MIT modeling conference — contains no mention of China, Song Jian, or Chinese population policy. Population policy in general is a different matter, and the distinction is load-bearing: Forrester's essay argues at length about limiting population growth, models a 50 per cent cut in "normal birth rate," and concludes that "efforts for direct population control may be inherently self-defeating." It is a text about population policy that never touches the Chinese one.
The only vault note that names both halves of the story is claim-song-jian-missile-scientist-engineered-one-child-policy-via-cybernetics-of-population, which cites Susan Greenhalgh's account that Song "boldly and arbitrarily modif[ied] the work of the Club of Rome" into a "Sinified cybernetics of population" after encountering it at the 1978 IFAC World Congress. Without that mediating note, the Liang and Forrester texts are two independently true, independently sourced accounts that share a subject — population growth, government policy aimed at limiting it, and the authority claimed for computer modelling of both — without directly informing each other. The resemblance is thematic rather than lexical: the two texts are in different languages, and Forrester's contains neither the year 1978 nor the word "projections." The high embedding similarity is not a false-friend pairing in the sense of being topically unrelated; it reflects a genuine same-story, different-facet resemblance — Song Jian's method traced to its 1970 origin on one side, Liang's rejection of Song's 1980 causal credit on the other — that only becomes a connected argument once the mediating note is read alongside both.
