Rufus Isaacs's first RAND paper (1951) already contained precursors of the maximum principle, dynamic programming, and backward analysis — five years before Pontryagin's 1956 announcement

Rufus Isaacs joined the RAND Corporation in 1948 and produced his first paper there in 1951, Games of Pursuit (RAND P-257), founding what became the field of differential game theory. Per a peer-reviewed historical study by M. H. Breitner in the Journal of Optimization Theory and Applications (2005): "The ideas already included rudimentary precursors of the maximum principle, dynamic programming, and backward analysis." Isaacs's own later synthesis in his 1965 textbook Differential Games built on this same backward-analysis machinery — reasoning from the end state of a pursuit problem toward the start, the same directional logic later formalized on the Soviet side.

This predates Lev Pontryagin's 1956 announcement of the maximum principle (with Boltyanskii, Gamkrelidze, and Mishchenko; see claim-pontryagin-worked-blind-via-mothers-spoken-symbol-glosses) by five years, and sits alongside the vault's existing American optimal-control precursor thread — claim-kelley-bryson-optimal-control-precursor (Kelley 1960, Bryson 1961) — as a third, earlier node in the same lineage that moc-backpropagation-origins traces forward to backpropagation. It bears on, without resolving, the vault's open question about whether Pontryagin's 1956 date genuinely marks the earliest independent discovery of maximum-principle-adjacent ideas: question-verify-pontryagin-1956-precedes-kelley-1960.
