Chapter 2 of C. H. Waddington's The Strategy of the Genes (1957) is literally titled "The Cybernetics of Development" and introduces the epigenetic landscape, "creode," and "homeorhesis" concepts. Read directly (pp. 26–38), it invokes "cybernetics" as a field name — "One would have expected that such a notion was a commonplace of the kinetics or cybernetics of polyphasic systems" — and the cyberneticist it engages for the relevant formal picture is W. Ross Ashby ("Ross Ashby (1952) has given a discussion in terms of two dimensions..."), not Norbert Wiener. Waddington cites Ashby's picture and then sets it aside — "This picture does not seem very appropriate for a consideration of development" — before developing his own multidimensional phase-space and epigenetic-landscape representation. Alan Turing is also named, for numerically computing developmental trajectories. Wiener's name does not appear anywhere in the excerpted pages.

This nuances the primary-source finding that Waddington did, elsewhere, name Wiener as an influence (claim-waddington-1977-whitehead-essay-names-wiener-cybernetics-as-lineage): in his most directly cybernetics-titled piece of primary science writing, the proximate cybernetic reference point for the relevant mathematical picture — cited, then adapted away from — is Ashby — a British cyberneticist associated with the Ratio Club, a lineage distinct from Wiener's American strand — not Wiener. Combined with claim-waddington-1968-nature-symposia-account-omits-wiener-and-cybernetics, Waddington's contemporary (1957, 1968) scientific writing about development and theoretical biology does not name Wiener even where cybernetics is the explicit subject; the Wiener self-credit is a later (1977), more retrospective and philosophical framing.
