C. H. Waddington
British developmental biologist (1905–1975) who coined the "epigenetic landscape" — a marble rolling down a hillside of branching valleys — as a picture for how a cell commits to one developmental fate among many, and who organized the Towards a Theoretical Biology symposia at the Villa Serbelloni (1966–68) bringing biologists into contact with the era's systems thinkers.
Matters to this vault as the person at the center of a live cross-domain bridge: his 1957 landscape metaphor was decades later given literal mathematical form as a Hopfield-network energy surface with cell types as attractors (claim-hopfield-network-formalizes-waddington-epigenetic-landscape), and separately reconstructed directly from single-cell gene-expression data (claim-cislo-siggia-2025-fit-waddington-landscape-directly-to-single-cell-gene-expression).
