W. Ross Ashby

British psychiatrist and cyberneticist (1903–1972), a founding member of the Ratio Club and author of Design for a Brain (1952) and An Introduction to Cybernetics (1956), whose homeostat and formal treatment of self-organizing dynamical systems made him one of the field's foundational figures alongside — and, in Britain, largely independent of — Norbert Wiener.
