Norbert Wiener

American mathematician (1894–1964) who founded cybernetics with his 1948 book Cybernetics: Or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine, and whose WWII-era anti-aircraft prediction work is a recurring reference point across the vault's control-theory lineage.

• 2026-10-01: A bipartite-hop promotion adds a dated, personally-mediated China contact twelve years before Cybernetics (1948): Wiener lectured at Tsinghua University in 1936, where Hua Luogeng attended, and Hua's circle runs forward to Qian Xuesen's acknowledged 1954 textual extension of Wiener's cybernetics and the 1962 China cybernetics lab. Set against Helen Gill's CPS coinage — a shared-root, not-a-derivation case per Edward A. Lee — the pairing is ruled a false friend: both modern institutions trace to Wiener, but at sharply asymmetric distances.
