Norbert Wiener
American mathematician (1894–1964) who founded cybernetics with his 1948 book Cybernetics: Or Control and Communication in the Animal and the Machine, and whose WWII-era anti-aircraft prediction work is a recurring reference point across the vault's control-theory lineage.

2026-09-09: Waddington does name Wiener's cybernetics as an influence, but only in a 1977 retrospective essay lumping Wiener with Bertalanffy as one of three parallel "same idea, different label" coinages (claim-waddington-1977-whitehead-essay-names-wiener-cybernetics-as-lineage) — his own working-scientist texts from 1957 and 1968 credit Ashby, Turing, and von Neumann instead, and never name Wiener (claim-waddington-1957-cybernetics-of-development-chapter-credits-ashby-not-wiener, claim-waddington-1968-nature-symposia-account-omits-wiener-and-cybernetics).
