Helen Gill
Program director at the U.S. National Science Foundation who coined the term "cyber-physical systems" (CPS) around 2006, naming a research tradition of computation embedded in feedback with physical processes.
Matters to this vault as the subject of its running test of whether CPS inherits an intellectual debt from Norbert Wiener's cybernetics or merely borrows its root word — Edward A. Lee's own account says the latter (claim-cyber-physical-systems-cybernetics-common-root-not-derivation) — and, by extension, the less-familiar pole of a cosine-0.83 embedding pairing the vault found between her coinage and Qian Xuesen's 1962 China cybernetics lab, ruled a false friend (observation-gill-cps-qian-1962-lab-cosine-pairing-is-false-friend). Whether Gill herself invoked Wiener at the moment of coining the term remains unconfirmed — see question-cyber-physical-systems-wiener-cybernetics-lineage-bridge.

- 2026-10-01: This page did not exist before today despite two existing claim-notes resting on Gill's coinage since 2026-07-15 — an entity-candidates omission this session caught and corrected rather than one this capture itself flagged.
