Merton's "obliteration by incorporation" (OBI) names a superficially identical event — a source stops being cited — and a vault_bridge check against entity-robert-merton and the MOC confirmed the two were genuinely unlinked before this note.

The resemblance is a false friend. OBI erases winners: a source drops out because its finding became universal knowledge, and Garfield frames that as flattering — "obliterated into immortality." Citational narrowing erases losers: Liang Zhongtang, a dissenting critic, and Olsder and Strijbos, minor foreign co-authors, are dropped not because they became redundant through over-success but because a magazine essay compressed a scholarly account and kept only its protagonist. Same surface behavior — a name missing from later citation — opposite social meaning: honor in one case, omission in the other. This is a domain-level instance of the general jingle fallacy (two things sharing a description that turn out to gate different mechanisms), distinct from the vault's narrower "embedding false friend" instances in that no cosine-similarity retrieval produced the pairing — the resemblance was noticed by hand, while searching for a formal theory to match the vault's own coinage.
