further lead it "left unfollowed," Gene Hunt's 2007 quantitative result: across roughly 250 fossil
lineages, stasis and unbiased random walk dominate the fitted models while directional trends
are rare — a finding that would partially narrow the strong Eldredge–Gould punctuated-equilibrium
claim. Because the capture read this only secondhand (no primary opened) and it is a specific
quantitative claim (~250 lineages), it was not promoted; a number of this kind must rest on
its primary before it becomes a note.
