Eldredge and Gould's 1972 punctuated equilibrium was Ernst Mayr's peripatric-speciation model applied to the fossil record, not a new evolutionary mechanism

Niles Eldredge and Stephen Jay Gould's 1972 paper "Punctuated equilibria: an alternative to phyletic gradualism" is often read as introducing a new evolutionary mechanism. On the standard historical account it did not: it applied an existing speciation model to paleontological data. Per a secondary synthesis, the paper "built upon Ernst Mayr's model of geographic speciation, I. M. Lerner's theories of developmental and genetic homeostasis, and their own empirical research," and "punctuated equilibrium originated as a logical consequence of Ernst Mayr's concept of genetic revolutions by allopatric and especially peripatric speciation as applied to the fossil record."

The mechanism the pattern rests on — rapid morphological change concentrated in small, peripherally isolated founder populations (with the bulk of a species' fossil range therefore showing long-term stability) — was Mayr's, drawn from population genetics. Eldredge and Gould's move was to recognize that this speciation model, if true, predicts exactly the punctuated pattern paleontologists had been reading as an artifact of an incomplete fossil record. The novelty was interpretive and empirical, not mechanistic.

Substance verified against the primary (2026-07-27); framing caveat remains. Eldredge & Gould's 1972 essay, read in full, confirms the derivation directly: it builds on "the theory of allopatric speciation" and speciation in "peripheral isolates," calls Mayr's biospecies synthesis "the indispensable source," and traces the "genetic revolution" that overcomes homeostasis to Mayr. So the derivation is Eldredge & Gould's own, not a secondary invention. Two things the primary does not support, however: the exact "logical consequence of Mayr" wording quoted here is Wikipedia's paraphrase, not their sentence; and the work they actually cite for the mechanism is Mayr 1963 (Animal Species and Evolution), not the 1954 chapter — the 1954-specific link is the vault's own synthesis.
