Promoted one capture today, running headless:
10-inbox/raw/2026-08-31-did-bertram-baxters-wagonway-research-actually-establish-that.md,
the follow-up research on the open question about Bertram Baxter's wagonway
survey and whether 4'8.5" is really "traceable to Stephenson's 1829
practice."
Winnowed four claims plus a verdict paragraph down to three claim-notes, two entity hubs, and one routed question. Promoted:
- claim-two-independent-secondary-accounts-agree-no-standard-wagonway-gauge-existed — merged the capture's Claims 1 and 2 into one note, since both were the same underlying assertion ("no standard wagonway gauge") from two source lines, one crediting Baxter and one not. Splitting them would have been two near-duplicate notes pretending to be atomic.
- claim-stephensons-4ft8in-gauge-predates-1829-only-final-halfinch-dated-there — the capture's Claim 3. This one actually narrows the vault's existing framing, not just adds to it.
- claim-willington-waggonway-1785-excavation-claims-full-gauge-predates-stephenson — the capture's Claim 4, and the real find of the session: an institutional account that flatly contradicts the one above.
- entity-george-stephenson and entity-bertram-baxter — both cleared the person test (real, matters, sayable in one sentence) and neither had a page despite anchoring two notes already in the vault. Checked for a Baxter collision first —
entity-william-baxter.mdexists, but he's the unrelated antitrust William F. Baxter; cross-linked for disambiguation rather than confused. - question-verify-willington-waggonway-1785-excavation-report — new question, because the Willington claim rests entirely on a blog summary of an excavation report (Carlton & Williams) that 403'd on every route the originating session tried. That's a load-bearing doubt a kept claim actually rests on, not a nice-to-have.
Skipped the capture's "Verdict on the core question" section — it's a
synthesis across the four claims, not itself atomic, so it went into a
progress line on question-verify-standard-gauge-origin-baxter-wagonways
instead of a fifth note. Left the "Further leads" list alone (Vaughan
unread, Tomlinson's OCR page unisolated, Dennis's Medium piece 403'd,
Ogata's 2006 paper uninvestigated, Smiles's Gutenberg scan empty) — none of
those are claims. Held back five entity candidates as single-mention or
unread-primary (Willington Waggonway, Killingworth Waggonway, Tomlinson,
Dixon, Vaughan, Carlton & Williams, Dominique Bell) and one recurring-but-
not-load-bearing concept (loading gauge vs. track gauge, now flagged
[watch] since this is its second appearance without ever anchoring its
own claim). Bias against the flood, per the entity spec.
Ruled on the originating question rather than closing it. The capture
answers part of what
question-verify-standard-gauge-origin-baxter-wagonways asked (a second
independent corroborating source now exists) but not the load-bearing part
(Baxter's own text is still unread, and the dating question got more
contested, not less). Appended a progress line; left status: open. Forcing
this closed would have been dishonest — the session made the question
harder, which is a real outcome, just not the one that lets me retire it.
What felt off about the capture. Nothing sourcing-wise — this was one of
the more careful captures I've promoted, with real per-source source_sha
values, honest tier assignments, and flags that actually match what the
evidence supports rather than getting laundered toward a clean answer. If
anything the interesting "off" note is structural: two Tier 3-4 institutional
sources (a museum archaeology blog and a project-management history white
paper) flatly disagree about when a specific historical measurement
originated, and both write with the confidence of settled fact. That's not a
sourcing failure on this capture's part — it's an honest report of a real
disagreement in the secondary literature that most retellings of this myth
never surface at all. Flagged the contradiction itself as a [post]
candidate in seek-flags.md; it's a better essay hook unresolved than most
findings are resolved.
Skipped per running instructions, not by choice: the pause-for-Cali step (headless run, no one to ask) and any git operation (the auto-commit agent handles that within 15 minutes; I have no shell access to it here anyway).

Second capture promoted today, still headless:
10-inbox/raw/2026-08-31-do-caracciolo-sportiello-2012-and-dickman-et-al.md
— a direct primary-source check of the two quantitative figures the
2026-08-30 SOC session had to leave [unverified-quant]: the 2D BTW
sandpile's 17/8 average height (Caracciolo & Sportiello, 2012) and the
Abelian Manna Model's 0.9488(5) average height (Dickman et al., 2001).
Two claims found, both promoted, both clean quotes off the primaries.
- claim-caracciolo-sportiello-2012-confirms-17-8-average-height — the 17/8 figure is exact, digit-for-digit, right there in the abstract of the primary. As clean as source-verification gets.
- claim-dickman-2001-critical-density-corroborates-not-exactly-matches-watkins-figure — the more interesting result: Dickman et al. print three separate critical-density estimates (0.94887(7), 0.94883(5), and an adopted 0.94885(7)), and none of them is written "0.9488(5)." The figure Watkins et al. cite is a compressed, rounded transcription of the paper's actual numbers, not a literal quotation of any one of them — right ballpark, wrong claim to make about precision. I folded the capture's separate "does Dickman's model use the threshold-1 convention" claim into this note as supporting detail rather than giving it its own file; on its own it was too thin to be a distinct, linkable claim.
Not promoted: the capture's synthesis paragraph (not atomic — captured
instead in the routed question's answered_log), and four "further leads"
(Huynh et al. 2011, the Fey-Levine-Wilson ensemble-vs-driven-system
subtlety, Grassberger's own unlocated primary, the uninvestigated "Dhar
1999b" citation) — none load-bearing for a kept claim, so none became a
question. Full reasoning is in the capture's own not_promoted: list.
Retrieve-before-write found one real target, not a collision.
claim-btw-near-threshold-clustering-is-1d-sandpile-coincidence-not-general-soc-signature
was carrying exactly the [unverified-quant] flag this capture exists to
resolve, so rather than write two orphaned new notes I linked both new
claims back into it, updated its audit_status and body with a dated
resolution note, and moved its status from seedling to budding — one
figure now exact, one now grounded with an honest precision caveat, neither
still unverified. Also ruled the originating question,
question-verify-caracciolo-sportiello-dickman-soc-threshold-average-heights,
answered — a real, investigated answer even though it isn't a clean yes.
Entity work: seven new hubs, one existing page updated. Ran the person test on all nine candidates the capture flagged. Promoted: Grassberger (the originating conjecture, even though his own primary is still unlocated — same epistemic shape as Per Bak's existing page, sourced via a review rather than his own paper, and I said so on the page rather than smoothing it over), Deepak Dhar (the recurring citation-bridge between Grassberger and everyone who confirms him), S.S. Manna, Sergio Caracciolo, Andrea Sportiello, Ronald Dickman, and — overdue — Nicholas W. Watkins himself, whose 2015 review anchors six claim-notes now and had somehow never gotten a hub of its own. Held back Alessandro Vespignani (one of six Dickman co-authors, no distinct role stated) and Chao Tang / Kurt Wiesenfeld (real and foundational, but this capture does no independent work on them, and entity-per-bak already covers the BTW trio in prose — creating two near-duplicate stub pages felt like flood, not signal). Updated entity-per-bak with a dated line: the 17/8 figure his page already cited via the review is now confirmed against the primary directly.
What felt off about the capture: nothing, really — this is what a
well-run verification capture looks like. Both source_sha values check
out, both quotes were pulled by direct extract_pdf, and the capture
resisted the temptation to round the Dickman finding up to a clean
confirmation. If I have a note, it's structural rather than a sourcing
complaint: the SOC/sandpile cluster has quietly grown to 7 claim-notes and
8 entity hubs with no MOC tying them together, which I flagged to
00-meta/seek-flags.md as [entity] rather than building it myself
mid-promotion.
Skipped, same as this morning: the pause-for-Cali step and any git operation — headless run, auto-commit agent handles the rest within 15 minutes.

Third capture promoted today, still headless:
10-inbox/raw/2026-08-31-hop-goodrich-china-institute-dewey.md — a hop
chain that started at A.E. Clark's essay venue (Law & Liberty / Liberty
Fund, already a vault fixture via the one-child-policy cluster) and walked
backward through its founder's own biography, landing — by genuine
coincidence, 65-plus years earlier than anything the vault already
tracks — on a completely unrelated Sino-American cultural institution
co-founded by John Dewey.
Three claims found in the capture; two promoted as notes, one folded in.
- claim-goodrich-china-institute-of-america-trustee-met-mei-at-wabash — Pierre Goodrich's 1948-65 China Institute of America trusteeship and his 1950-51 meeting with Y.P. Mei at Wabash College. The capture's own Claim 3 (Mei's independent biography) folded into this note as corroborating detail rather than standing alone — it establishes Mei is real, not that the meeting happened as described, so it belongs inside the claim it corroborates rather than beside it.
- claim-china-institute-of-america-founded-1926-by-dewey-hu-shih-monroe-and-kuo — the institute's own founding claim, a clean, uncontested Tier-2 self-statement that needed no flag.
Flagged the trusteeship note, kept it at seedling. The Goodrich note is
the whole reason this capture is interesting, and it's also the part I
trust least: both the trustee dates and the specific Wabash/1950-51 detail
come from Liberty Fund's own page about its own founder, and Mei's
independent biography corroborates the man without corroborating the
meeting. Tagged [unverified-corroboration] and routed
question-corroborate-goodrich-mei-wabash-meeting — Wabash College's own
1950-51 records are the specific lead that would settle it. Not urgent
(low-stakes, not the kind of thing a foundation invents), but load-bearing
for the note as written, so it doesn't get to sit unflagged.
One entity hub, four candidates held back. entity-pierre-goodrich
cleared the person test cleanly — real, and the one-sentence "why" writes
itself: he's the person-bridge between the vault's existing Liberty Fund
cluster and a China connection nobody knew he had. Held back Y.P. Mei
(real, but his vault relevance is one meeting — thin), John Dewey and Hu
Shih (both major, both real, but a single co-founder credit with no
existing pragmatism thread to anchor to — logged as a [watch] flag
rather than promoted, in case a second hop ever touches either name), and
Liberty Fund itself (fails the stricter 2026-08-10 org bar — it's a
publishing venue here, not an org that acts in the argument, and this
capture doesn't change that). Checked the retrieval hints Seek's index
surfaced for this capture (entity-jeff-kodosky, claim-fli-summer-2026-...,
CNAISDA, etc.) — none of them actually connect; that index ranks by
embedding proximity to the capture's language (China, safety framing,
institutional history), not its actual claims, so it was a false lead this
time. No collision found in 30-notes/ or 40-entities/ on a direct
name search either (Goodrich, Liberty Fund, China Institute, Dewey, Hu
Shih, Mei all came back clean).
Not promoted, and not questioned either: the capture's three "further
leads" (Boxer Indemnity funding, the Burke-reprint link to the vault's
existing Burke/Price cluster, Mont Pelerin Society membership) are real
but none of them are claims a kept note rests on, so per the question-
intake discipline none became a 50-questions/ entry. They stay exactly
where the capture left them, for whoever picks this thread up next.
What felt off about the capture. Genuinely, not much — this is a careful hop-chain capture that flagged its own weakest point already ("post-worthy: maybe... it rests on three self-published/secondary institutional pages rather than an academic source"). I agree with that self-assessment and think it undersells it only slightly: all three sources here are institutions describing themselves or their own founders, which is a real epistemic pattern worth naming — self-published institutional history is a decent source for "did this relationship exist" and a weak one for "exactly when, where, precisely how" — and I carried that distinction into the flag rather than let a clean Tier-2 label paper over it. No tier inflation, no duplicated research; the capture correctly identified that its Song-Jian/Liang-Zhongtang seed topic was already resolved in-vault and left it alone rather than re-mining it, which is exactly the hop-protocol discipline working as intended.
Skipped, same as the other two today: the pause-for-Cali step and any git operation — headless run, auto-commit agent handles the rest within 15 minutes.

Fourth capture promoted today, still headless:
10-inbox/raw/2026-08-31-what-genuinely-connects-petiškas-2023-chatgptmatthew-effect-finding.md
— a meta-investigation asking whether two of the vault's own "confirmed
bridge" verdicts (the Petiška/Garfield/RA-RAG content bridge and the
Gates-Jevons/Liang-Olsder cosine-0.87 method bridge) are themselves
genuinely connected, or just sharing a label.
Verdict: no, and the capture said so honestly rather than forcing a connection to justify its own premise. Two notes, one question, no collisions:
- observation-petiska-and-gates-jevons-liang-olsder-bridges-are-two-species-not-one-relationship — the actual answer to the topic's question. Folded the capture's Claims 2 and 3 (object-level entity/domain comparison; capture-lineage/ rhetorical-scaffolding comparison) into this one note as supporting evidence rather than writing three near-identical verdict notes — they're all the same finding argued from different angles, not three atomic claims.
- claim-garfield-seglen-and-steck-warnings-share-a-scalar-proxy-structure
— the actual find, and not the one the topic asked for. Garfield/Seglen's
warning against a journal-mean citation count standing in for an
individual article, and Steck/Ekanadham/Kallus's warning against cosine
similarity standing in for genuine relatedness, are the identical
argument — a cheap scalar substituted for a harder judgment — forty-some
years and two unrelated fields apart, never having cited each other. Kept
at
seedlingand tagged[unverified-synthesis]: this is my own connective read across two already-sourced claim-notes, not something either paper states, so it doesn't get to claim more certainty than that. - question-corroborate-garfield-seglen-steck-scalar-proxy-parallel-named-in-literature — routed the unverified-synthesis flag: does the ecological-fallacy or Goodhart's-law family of concepts already name this pattern? If so, the parallel gets an external anchor instead of resting on my own reading alone. This also absorbed the capture's own "further leads" curiosity about whether the pattern has a settled name — same question, one entry, not two.
Retrieve-before-write: no collisions, two entity pages updated instead of
skipped. Neither new note duplicates anything existing — I checked by
name (Steck.*Garfield, different species, content bridge/method bridge) across 30-notes/ and came back clean. But entity-per-seglen
and entity-harald-steck both already have hub pages, and this capture
teaches both pages something new (the cross-field parallel), so per the
"already has a page → update it" rule I appended a dated line to each
rather than letting a known entity go unmentioned. Left
entity-eugene-garfield and entity-robert-merton alone — the capture
itself says both were "reinforced, no new fact," and I agree; touching
those pages would have been noise, not diligence. Eduard Petiška still has
no page, still correctly — one thin preprint author, no new fact this
session either, same call as before.
What felt off about the capture. Nothing sourcing-wise — every claim in
it rests on vault-internal Tier-1 notes that were already independently
verified when they were written, and the capture was honest about the one
real limitation: mcp__seek__vault_bridge/vault_novelty/vault_word all
returned permission errors again this session, so the whole analysis is a
direct textual comparison rather than a tool-confirmed cosine reading. Per
running instructions this is a well-logged standing gap (open on
00-meta/seek-flags.md since 2026-08-22, now spanning four tools) — not
re-logging it, just noting it here since it's the reason both new notes
carry synthesis-grade rather than tool-confirmed audit status. The one
thing genuinely worth naming: this capture is itself a second-order
investigation about two prior bridge-investigation captures, and its most
valuable output (the Garfield/Steck parallel) is one level removed from the
question it was actually asked. That's not a flaw in the capture — it did
the honest thing and reported the real find instead of manufacturing the
asked-for connection — but it's worth watching whether this "investigate
the investigation" pattern keeps paying off or starts producing diminishing
meta-returns. Logged as a [watch] line on 00-meta/seek-flags.md.
Skipped, same as the rest of today: the pause-for-Cali step and any git operation — headless run, auto-commit agent handles the rest within 15 minutes.

Fifth capture promoted today, still headless:
10-inbox/raw/2026-08-31-what-genuinely-connects-the-2026-08-16-capture.md
— a third "investigate the investigation" capture in the same bridge-
taxonomy thread as the fourth (above), this time asking whether the
2026-08-16 dropped-Puckette-mention note and the Petiška Matthew-effect
bridge note — flagged as unlinked neighbors at cosine 0.87 — are actually
connected.
Verdict: no, cleanly, and one note to show for it. The capture laid out four numbered "claims," but on a close read they're one verdict argued from four angles (no shared document/entity/date; the vault's own buried-common- ancestor test returns negative here where it returned positive for the precedent Puckette/Gates-Jevons pair; the 0.87 tracks shared bridge- investigation vocabulary, the same mechanism already diagnosed twice at this exact cosine value; the deeper split is second-order vault-fact versus first-order world-fact) — not four atomic, independently linkable claims. Splitting them would have produced four near-duplicate notes making the same point four times, which is exactly the kind of fragmentation the sibling notes in this lineage (Gates-Jevons, RHW/DOCSUB, the buried- common-ancestor note itself) don't do — each of those bundles its supporting legs into one note. I matched that house style: observation-puckette-dropped-mention-petiska-matthew-effect-pairing-is-embedding-false-friend is the one note, carrying all four legs as its body.
No questions routed. The only flag in the capture is the standing
vault_bridge/vault_novelty permission-error gap on the raw 0.87 cosine
value — open since 2026-08-11, not re-logged as a fresh question per the
vault's own established convention for this exact gap, and not load-bearing
regardless: the false-friend verdict rests on direct document comparison
(no shared entity/document/date, test returns negative), not on the precise
cosine number. The "other pairs untested" and "Petiška single-author"
further-leads are curiosities and an already-flagged caveat respectively,
not load-bearing doubts a kept note rests on — full reasoning is in the
capture's own not_promoted: list.
Retrieve-before-write: no collision, one hub updated. Checked
30-notes/ by name and content for this exact pairing first — the capture's
own bridge-seed check had already confirmed no prior capture named both
notes together, and I found nothing on a second pass either. But
entity-jingle-fallacy is the hub that has been tracking every instance
of exactly this species of investigation since 2026-08-11, with a dated
changelog entry for each prior hop (2026-08-16 fourth false-friend
instance, 2026-08-20 hedged bridge, 2026-08-22 citation-genealogy bridge,
2026-08-25 buried-common-ancestor bridge, 2026-08-29 fifth instance and
second confirmed bridge), so per the "already has a page → update it" rule
I appended a sixth dated line and a References entry rather than letting
this new instance go unrecorded in the one place built to track it.
entity-matthew-effect.md I left alone — this capture teaches nothing new
about the Matthew effect itself, only that it's unrelated to the jingle-
fallacy lineage, and that's the jingle-fallacy hub's business to record,
not the Matthew-effect hub's.
No entity work. All three named figures (Merton, Garfield, Puckette) already have pages, and the capture's own read — that this finding is about vault-internal note relationships, not a new fact about any of the three — held up on review. No page edits.
What felt off about the capture. Sourcing was clean — every claim rests
on vault-internal Tier-1 notes, each independently sourced in its own
frontmatter, and the capture was honest about the one real gap (the
permission-blocked cosine tools) without re-litigating it as new. The
thing worth naming structurally: this is now the third "investigate the
investigation" capture in eight days on the same bridge-taxonomy thread
(2026-08-29, 2026-08-31 morning, this one), and all three have reached a
clean, confident negative. Three-for-three on "no" is itself worth
watching — either the vault's cross-lineage cosine flags are genuinely
mostly false alarms at this similarity band, or the discriminating test
this lineage keeps applying has a blind spot that only produces "no."
I don't think it's the latter (the test found a real positive for the
Puckette/Gates-Jevons pair three captures ago, so it isn't structurally
incapable of a "yes"), but three clean negatives in a row on a thread that
exists specifically to hunt for buried bridges is a pattern, not noise, and
I logged it as a [watch] line on 00-meta/seek-flags.md rather than
letting it pass unremarked a third time.
Skipped, same as the rest of today: the pause-for-Cali step and any git operation — headless run, auto-commit agent handles the rest within 15 minutes.
