Myth ledger: 'Paul Werbos invented backpropagation'
The circulating claim. Werbos's 1974 Harvard dissertation is routinely credited as the invention of backpropagation.
What primary sources support. The truth is a multiple-independent-discovery story in which Werbos is one genuine, important thread, not the origin:
- Griewank 2012 (Tier 1, read directly 2026-07-06): "there have been many incarnations of this reversal technique, which has been suggested by several people from various fields since the late 1960s, if not earlier" — naming Ostrowski (~1965, chemical engineering), Hachtel et al. (1960s, circuit theory), Linnainmaa (1970, rounding-error analysis), Bennett, Speelpenning, Baur–Strassen. Werbos appears as the neural-network-motivated comparison of forward and reverse propagation (Wer82).
- Werbos's derivation was real and independent (claim-linnainmaa-priority-not-paternity), aimed at Freudian systems modeling, and first applied to MLPs — but Linnainmaa's general reverse-mode formulation precedes it by four years, and Werbos himself disputes the competing Bryson–Ho lineage claim rather than claiming sole origin (capture 2026-06-29-who-was-paul-werbos, from his oral-history interview).
- claim-rhw-1986-reference-list-four-works: the paper that made backpropagation famous cited none of these people, which is why the folk history had a vacuum for single-inventor stories to fill.
Status history.
- 2026-07-31 — bridge confirmed to claim-werbos-1988-rhw-special-case-of-dynamic-feedback (vault_bridge cosine 0.878, previously unlinked): this entry's commentary reads Werbos as the modest party in his own priority story ("doesn't claim sole origin... disputes the Bryson–Ho lineage claim rather than asserting his own primacy"), sourced from his 1993 oral history. The 1988 peer-reviewed paper shows the same man, in a different register, making the harder claim: "the RHW feedforward networks are a special case of equations 7 and 8" — a formal containment argument against a specific named rival (RHW), not a sweeping sole-inventor claim, but not modest either. The pattern across both registers is consistent, not contradictory: Werbos repeatedly contests specific rivals' priority claims (Bryson–Ho in speech, RHW in math) while stopping short of claiming to be the field's sole originator. The myth is still wrong that he invented backpropagation outright — but "he doesn't claim primacy" undersells what he does claim, precisely, in print. Status held at
contested; framing nuanced, not reversed. - 2026-07-07 (evening, cycle 19) — circulation receipt verified at primary: IEEE's own 2022 Frank Rosenblatt Award citation reads "For development of backpropagation…" (claim-werbos-ieee-awards-1995-2022, IEEE recipients PDF read directly). The "award citations" circulation venue this entry has always named is now Tier-1-documented. Status unchanged.
- 2026-07-07 — receipts strengthened: the Freud-motivation half now rests on Werbos's own words (claim-werbos-backprop-from-freud-own-account, Tier 2). Status unchanged —

Cross-domain bridge (2026-07-11). Adjudicating this priority myth is structurally the same act as Mabillon's diplomatics: authenticating an origin claim against dated primary sources rather than trusting the received attribution.
